Artisan Maker Story: Free Women

For generations, rug weaving has been one of Afghanistan’s most enduring artistic traditions.

Across villages and families, women have long passed down the knowledge of weaving, guiding wool threads across the loom to create intricate patterns that reflect both heritage and identity. Each rug carries the quiet imprint of the hands that made it.

Today, that tradition continues through the work of Free Women, an artisan collective founded in 2020 by Hanifa Javadi, an Afghan refugee who resettled in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Free Women provides employment and skill development for Afghan women who were forced to leave their home country due to unsafe living conditions. In their new community, weaving has become both a source of livelihood and a way to preserve a cultural tradition deeply rooted in their lives.

The collective is composed of twenty-six women who gather not only to work, but to support one another as they build new futures for their families.

Yet their hearts remain closely tied to the loved ones they left behind.

Each month, the women come together and contribute what they can to help family and friends still living in Afghanistan. Names are written on small slips of paper and placed in a shared container before one is chosen, a simple ritual of collective care that reflects the deep bonds within their community.

As Hanifa explains:

“This job is not just for me. It’s for everyone.”

Through their work, these artisans support their families in both the United States and abroad while continuing the centuries-old craft of Afghan rug weaving.

Every rug created by Free Women carries more than pattern and color.

It carries a story of heritage, resilience, and the enduring strength of women who continue to weave hope into their future.
