Gary was in the Black Hills when I reached him; not in a hurry, not near a studio, and not especially interested in explaining why. He was scouting quietly, watching the way light moved through elevation and weather, letting the landscape decide if it had something to offer. He mentioned it almost in passing, as if the work happens whether he speaks about it or not. He said he’d follow up on the prints on Monday. That was enough. With Gary, the images arrive from long stretches of patience, from being present without interruption, from knowing when to wait and when to lift the camera, and from understanding that stillness often says more than words.
The Work, Observed
Gary’s photographs do not announce themselves. They ask the viewer to slow down, to notice what might otherwise be missed.
