Lunch Counter
Meet the Artist →An Unexpected Table In The Wild.
Lunch Counter captures one of the quieter relationships of the Western landscape. Brown-headed cowbirds gather around a resting bison, taking advantage of the insects and other food opportunities created by the enormous animal's presence and movement through the grasslands. Perched comfortably along its back, the birds turn the bison into their own unlikely lunch counter.
David W. Jackson brings humor and observation together without turning the scene into caricature. The immense weight and textured coat of the bison contrast with the small, alert birds above, while warm earth tones and loose, expressive brushwork give the painting the immediacy of a moment witnessed in the wild.
The title reveals what makes the composition particularly engaging. Lunch Counter is not simply a portrait of an iconic Western animal. It is a glimpse into the relationships that exist around it, where one creature's daily passage through the landscape creates opportunity for another.
As an original oil painting, Lunch Counter carries the texture, depth, and painterly character of David W. Jackson's hand, along with the observational storytelling that makes the work especially rewarding at close range.
