Medallion Study No. 33

Richly layered and visually commanding, Medallion Study No. 33 is a handwoven Afghan textile centered around an elongated pendant medallion framed by dense geometric detail and deeply saturated border work. The composition balances symmetry and ornament with remarkable precision, creating a textile that feels both ceremonial and architectural.

The palette moves through ember, walnut, indigo, garnet, tobacco, sable, and warm parchment tones, producing extraordinary visual depth and contrast. A repeating lattice field anchors the composition beneath the central medallion, while the surrounding floral and geometric borders create a rhythmic frame that draws the eye inward.

Unlike more restrained geometric studies, this piece embraces layered ornamentation and tonal richness. The elongated pendant motif introduces a strong vertical movement through the center of the textile, giving the composition a sense of gravity and quiet formality.

While the precise regional attribution of this textile remains intentionally unassigned, its visual language reflects longstanding weaving traditions found across parts of Central and South Asia.
